IHOP, which is known mostly for their famous pancakes, has been serving families for the last 54 years. The very first IHOP, which was founded by Al and Jerry Lapin, opened up in 1958 in the Los Angeles area. It was not long before they started to become a franchised company – with the first franchise opening in 1960. In 1961, they became a publicly traded company and the word began to spread. It was not until 1973 that the famous pancake house became known for the acronym, IHOP, as it is known today. One of IHOP’s most famous dishes, the Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity was introduced in 1985 and has since become quite a phenomenon. The 500th restaurant opened in 1992 and the 1000th opened in 2001. By 2008, there were more than 1,400 locations throughout the United States.
